AVRISP User Guide

Thank you for purchasing this USB AVRISP from Digikits.

Here we are giving you a quick start of using this ISP. More information can be found on the Atmel's help file AVRISP.chm available from the AVR Studio.
Please be advised that the Atmel's help file refers to the AVRISP RS232 version while our USB AVRISP uses the USB port. You will install the Virtual
Serial Port Driver. Because of the Virtual Serial Port Driver, your PC treats the AVRISP as a serial device. You can see the "CP210x USB to UART Bridge
Controller" under Windows Device Manager > Ports

What you need to get started?
1) Read Me First Quick Start Guide(this file)
2) USB Driver CP210x_VCP_Win2K_XP.exe, downloaded from www.digikits.com/avrisp_cd/USB_driver.zip
or download from https://www.silabs.com/products/mcu/Pages/USBtoUARTBridgeVCPDrivers.aspx
3) AVR Studio, downloaded from atmel.com
4) Help file AVRISP.chm available from the AVR Studio

========== Driver Installation==========

Before you can use the AVRISP, you must install the USB Driver. Click on the CP210x_VCP_Win2K_XP.exe and follow the instruction to install the Virtual
Serial Port Driver.
www.digikits.com/avrisp_cd/USB_driver.zip

For Latest Drivers for Windows 2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista Macintosh OSX Linux:
https://www.silabs.com/products/mcu/Pages/USBtoUARTBridgeVCPDrivers.aspx

(comment from a user from Norway Jan 2008:Received fast overseas! Works in vista with correct drivers. Recommended!!)
(For OS X, we got a message from one of our customers: "Works perfectly on OS X with avrdude from macports and CP2102 drivers. THANKS!".We have not tested this ourselves.)

========== AVR Studio Installation==========
Download the AVR Studio from:
http://www.atmel.com/dyn/products/tools_card.asp?tool_id=2725

Install the AVR Studio. Please follow the instruction on the screen.

========== Start Up==========

Connect the AVRISP to your target board. For information about the hardware connection of the ISP, please see the AVRISP.chm under "Hardware
Description". Use the 10-wire or the 6-wire ISP cable. Connect the USB cable to your PC and the AVRISP. Apply power to your target board. Now your PC
assigns a COM port number to your USB AVRISP.

Start the AVR Studio

Click on Tools > Program AVR > Connect...
Select " STK500 or AVRISP" and "Auto" then click on " Connect..."
Now you can change the other setting on the AVRISP Screen. You may select a higher ISP speed (frequency) and click "write". The ISP speed depends on your target board's frequency. It should be less than 1/4 of the board's clock. 230.4 kHZ is good for most of the application.

You may change the fuse setting. Be careful not to "lock" your AVR MCU. For more information about the AVRISP, please read the help file AVRISP.chm's section "AVR Studio Software Front-end" .

========== Firmware Upgrade==========
Your USB AVRISP has been upgraded to the new version from this AVR Studio before shipping. Firmware Upgrading is usually done automatically by AVR Studio, if AVR Studio detects that the Firmware distributed with AVR Studio is newer that the Firmware present in the AVRISP. However, if the communication between the AVRISP and the PC is broken during Firmware Upgrading the AVRISP stops responding, both Firmware Upgrading and Programming will not work. The AVR ISP is NOT broken, but it is no longer able to automatically enter Programming mode. So you have to be careful not to disconnect the ISP until the upgrade is finished.

========== The Next Step==========

For more information about the AVRISP, please read the help file AVRISP.chm
